Overnight Tours

Ljördal - Sälen Mörkret - Sälen Sälen - Malung
To paddle a canoe and sleep out either under the open sky in a shelter or in a tent is wonderful in so many ways. The facilities along the way are few and you really are camping on nature's terms. It goes without saying that what you take with you on a tour you also take home with you, apart from the excellent food. It is precisely the food and other treats that complement a tour in the wilderness unlike mountain hiking; you have your canoe as a 'pack mule' and are able to bring along a few extra kilos.

My tip is clever packing but don't forget those little extras that spice up life.

Food tips: Bring along a grill rack and treat your friends to grilled fillet of beef and baked potatoes, all easily prepared over an open fire.
Ljördalen - Sälen, 65 km
One of Sweden's most beautiful tours. The tour starts in Norwegian Ljördalen and runs along the lovely Görälven with the magnificent Fulufjället alongside.

The tour requires careful packing, no major previous experience is needed as on the faster flowing sections you can tow or carry the canoes over land. You will also get plenty of good advice from our qualified guides before we let you go.

It is normally possible to do the trip throughout the season subject to too low or extremely high water flow.

Mörkret - Sälen, 71 km
The trail, Fuluälven or Fulan, extends initially along Fulufjällets nature reserve with plenty of wilderness, alternately calm, flowing waters and rapids.

The route down to Västerdalälven beginning contains mixed calm, flowing waters and rapids with a couple unnavigable portions where lifting is necessary. These stretches are so short that a trolley is not required.

Lift 1 at Strupforsen, not navigable. Before the bridge turn up on the left (east side), lift over the bridge down the other side. Approximately 100 m lift. Calm water before uptake.
Lift 2 about 3 km below Sörsjön at Edsforsen, not navigable. The river meanders off an old power station, now disused and grated. Paddle to the left of the dam against dam cover (cover is about 2 m wide with iron bars). Calm Water. Lift the dam cover and paddle out into the old trench which formed the outlet from the power plant. Calm water this the outlet. Approximately 30 m lift.

The entire route requires careful planning with packing in waterproof bags / barrels and restrained cargo in the the canoe. The route is very rocky in places with low water in late June. The route is recommended for paddlers with previous experience of paddling in streams and rapids. The route is navigable in late May to late June (possibly longer at high tide).

Sälen - Malung, 70 km
A nice calm route with only a few sections of less fast-flowing water along which the canoes can be towed from the land. The major obstacle along the route is Tandå power station past which the canoes have to be transported by trailer for approximately 700 m over land.

No previous experience is needed on this tour.

It is normally possible to do the trip throughout the season subject to extremely high water flow.
