About the trail

The Great Hemfjället Loop is an approximately 16 km mountain hike for those who want to experience Hemfjället in full. From Gustav Express in Lindvallen you head up onto the open fells and follow a large loop over the summit of Hemfjället (about 898 m), past Hemfjällsstugan and on to the scenic lake Stensjön before returning towards the top station. Along the way the landscape shifts between mountain birch forest, open fells and sweeping viewpoints over the Sälen mountains. It is a half-day hike of about 4–6 hours for visitors with normal fitness who want genuine mountain wilderness.

Yes. Gustav Express takes you up to the top station so you avoid the steepest climb.

The great loop is a half-day hike of about 4–6 hours at a moderate level. For families we recommend the short Hemfjället & Stensjön tour.
Is there food and coffee along the way?
Yes, Hemfjällsstugan halfway round serves waffles and coffee in season.
Are dogs allowed?
Yes, dogs are welcome. Keep your dog on a lead out of respect for reindeer, birds and other wildlife.
When is the best time to hike?
June–October when the trail is snow-free. Early morning gives calm and the best light over the fells.
Are there toilets?
Toilets are available at the Gustav Express base station and in Lindvallen. There are no toilets out on the fells.
Is the trail marked?
Parts of the loop follow marked trails, but marking is sparse on the open fells. Bring a map and the GPX track.
Do you need a map?
Yes. Download the GPX track and bring a map and compass or GPS, especially if the weather turns.
Can you hike here in autumn?
Yes, autumn is wonderful with the fells in full colour. Dress warmly and expect shorter days.
Do you have to walk the whole loop?
No. For a shorter experience choose the Hemfjället & Stensjön tour, which turns around at the lake.
