About the trail

Sälfjällsturen is one of the most classic loop hikes in the Sälen mountains – a day hike of about 14.7 km through genuine fell heath with sweeping views. From the trailhead car park at Gammelgården you follow the trail up onto the fells and round a large loop that links several of the area's finest spots: the scenic lake Stensjön, the classic Hemfjällsstugan hut, the panoramic Mellanfjället and the dramatic Storfjällsgraven. The landscape shifts between mountain birch forest, open fells and rolling heath, and from the higher sections vast views open up over the Sälen mountains. With just over 250 metres of ascent it is a half-day hike of around 4–6 hours for visitors with normal fitness – for many one of the best day hikes in Sälen.

Practical information

Allow around 4–6 hours on the fells. Start early, check the forecast and bring plenty of water, food and wind- and waterproof clothing – the weather on the open fells can change fast. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended as the trail is partly rocky and wet. Safety: save the route before you set off, stay on the trail, carry a map and a fully charged phone, and turn back in time if the weather turns. Mobile coverage is generally good on the open sections but weaker in hollows.

Local tips

Walk the loop clockwise and save Hemfjällsstugan for the halfway mark – stop for coffee there if the hut is open in season. Take a break at Stensjön and on Mellanfjället where the views are at their best. The morning hours often bring the calmest weather and the finest light over the fells.

Local recommendation

This is our favourite among the day hikes in Sälen. Set aside a good part of the day so you can take breaks and enjoy the views, even though the hike itself normally takes around 4–6 hours. Take it slow and enjoy the shift between forest, heath and wide-open mountain country – Sälfjällsturen gives you the whole of the Sälen mountains in a single loop.

Best is June–October when the trail is snow-free. The weather changes fast on the open fells, so set off in good time – the hike itself normally takes around 4–6 hours.
